Trump nominates Brett Kavanaugh as US Supreme Court Justice
(Baonghean.vn) - On the evening of July 9, US time, or the morning of July 10, Vietnam time, US President Donald Trump was present in the East Room of the White House to announce the nomination of Mr. Brett Kavanaugh as the candidate to replace Judge Kennedy at the Supreme Court of this country.

Judge Kavanaugh has served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit since May 26, 2006, about 12 years ago. The 53-year-old judge served in the Bush administration and also assisted independent counsel Kenneth Starr in the investigation that led to the impeachment of President Bill Clinton.
Kavanaugh has traditionally been a conservative vote on issues related to presidential powers, the Second Amendment to the US Constitution and religious freedom.
However, some social conservatives have criticized two of his views: First, his handling of the Affordable Care Act and second, the case of an undocumented pregnant minor seeking an abortion.
Speaking at the event, President Trump affirmed that Judge Kavanaugh, who he had just nominated for the position of US Supreme Court Justice, "has good qualities, outstanding abilities, and a proven commitment to equal justice under the law."
“In the legal community, he is considered a judge’s judge, a true leader among his peers,” Trump said. “He is a brilliant jurist with a clear, effective style, widely regarded as one of the finest and sharpest legal minds of our time.”
For his part, Brett Kavanaugh affirmed that he was grateful to President Trump for choosing him. “Mr. President, I am grateful to you, and moved by your confidence in me,” he said.
He also thanked Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan, who invited him to teach. “Over the past 11 years, I have taught hundreds of students, primarily at Harvard Law School. I teach that the separation of powers under the Constitution protects individual liberties, and I remain grateful to Justice Elena Kagan, who invited me to teach,” he said.
According to CNN, this move shows that Trump is planning to replace the retiring Justice Kennedy with a young, conservative figure. If confirmed by the US Congress, this will create a group of five conservative justices, potentially making the US court more right-wing.
