"The president will be traveling to Texas on Tuesday. We are coordinating logistics with state and local officials. We will let you know as soon as we have final information," White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said.

Trump tweeted on August 27 that he planned to visit Texas "as soon as it can be done without disruption." National Security Adviser Tom Bossert explained that Trump "does not want to impede" the relief effort.

Flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey in Texas, including in Houston - the fourth most populous city in the US, is the first major natural disaster in the US since Trump took office.

Because US presidential trips require extensive personnel and strict security procedures, they often avoid visiting during the height of natural disasters for fear of straining resources engaged in rescue and aid efforts.

However, in 2005, during Hurricane Katrina, former President George W. Bush was criticized for being insensitive for not visiting New Orleans, instead posting a photo of himself looking down at the storm damage from an airplane window. Last year, Trump criticized former President Obama for vacationing during massive flooding in Louisiana.

Harvey is the most powerful storm to hit Texas in more than 50 years, killing at least five people. The death toll is expected to rise as the storm continues to cause record flooding and tornadoes./.
