In an interview with Reuters on February 22, Mr. Trump said that the US position on nuclear weapons had declined but did not specify how it would expand.
“It would be a dream for no country to have nuclear weapons,” he said. “But if countries are going to have nuclear weapons, we have to be at the top.”
Asked about the president's remarks, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said it meant the US "will not cede our superiority in this area to anyone."
President Trump has publicly expressed his desire for the United States to become a military power, saying he would pursue a foreign policy of "peace through strength".
Less than a month before his inauguration, Mr. Trump also mentioned that the US needed more nuclear weapons.
Speaking atSouth Carolina last week, he said the best way to prevent war is to be prepared and that he would seek to strengthen the military so that "no one dares challenge" the United States.
