"We will restore safety to our streets and peace to our communities. We will destroy the vile MS-13 gang and many other gangs," US President Trump said on July 28 in a speech in Long Island, New York.

Long Island is heavily affected by brutal street gangs. Murders attributed to MS-13 have caused concern in the community.

“They kidnap, they extort, they rob, they rape,” Trump said. “They beat their victims with clubs, they slash them with machetes. They turn peaceful parks and beautiful quiet neighborhoods into bloody killing fields. They are animals,” Trump added.

"We will tighten our laws, protect our borders, and support our police like never before," the US President emphasized.

Trump and aides like Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly frequently talk up the dangers of MS-13 and its links to illegal immigration.

MS-13 is a street gang active in the United States, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. MS-13 specializes in drug trafficking, rape, and human trafficking. Members of the group have distinctive tattoos on their bodies. National Geographic and several documentaries have called the group the most dangerous gang in the world.

The Obama-era Treasury Department designated the group a transnational criminal organization in 2012. US law enforcement has been dealing with the gang for years.
