“We’re signing a very important document, a pretty comprehensive document,” Trump told a crowd of waiting reporters. He said he would discuss the document “thoroughly” at a press conference this afternoon, adding that the signed document would be made public.
Meanwhile, Kim Jong-un said he wanted to express his gratitude to President Trump for making the summit happen. Through an interpreter, Kim said: “We had a historic meeting and decided to leave the past behind and we are about to sign a historic document.”
“The world will witness a great change,” the Pyongyang leader continued.
A US official previously told CNN that the document would acknowledge progress in the talks, while pledging to continue maintaining the current momentum.
The signing came after a historic day of talks at Singapore's Capella Hotel on Sentosa Island, marking the first meeting between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader.
There were no plans for a signing ceremony at the start of the day, although much of the time was left open after a business lunch at 11:30 a.m. local time.
Trump announced that “a signing ceremony” would take place shortly after noon on June 12, during a walk with Kim Jong-un around the hotel grounds.
In addition, the US President affirmed that the process of denuclearizing North Korea will start "very, very quickly". When asked if North Korean leader Kim Jong-un agreed to denuclearize, Trump said: "We will start that process very quickly, very, very quickly. Absolutely."
