China: 17 dead after Super Typhoon Rammasun

More than 5.5 million people in Hainan, Guangdong provinces and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region were affected by the super typhoon.

The death toll after Super Typhoon Rammasun swept through China has risen to 17, as Hainan province confirmed one more victim on July 20.

Rammasun was the strongest typhoon to hit China in over four decades, causing extensive damage to the southern region, with Hainan province being the hardest hit. According to Chinese statistics, more than 5.5 million people in Hainan, Guangdong, and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region were affected by the super typhoon. Eight people in Hainan province, including two government employees involved in storm relief efforts, died.

In Guangxi, the storm killed nine people. China estimates economic losses in southern China after Super Typhoon Rammasun to be over 26.5 billion yuan (equivalent to over 4.3 million USD).
