China: Riots in Xinjiang leave 27 dead.
Chinese media reported that at least 27 people were killed in a riot that broke out on the morning of June 26 in a town in Shanshan County, Turpan Province, in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, northwestern China.
Xinhua News Agency quoted a local government official as saying the incident occurred around 6 a.m. (local time) in Turpan, about 280 kilometers from the capital Urumqi. A mob attacked police stations, local government buildings, and a construction site with knives, and also set fire to police vehicles.
The riot left 17 people dead, including 9 security personnel and 8 civilians, before police opened fire and killed 10 rioters. Three people were injured and are being treated at a local hospital. Police also arrested 3 suspects at the scene and are pursuing others who are currently at large.
The incident is currently under investigation.
Earlier, on April 24th, a riot also occurred in this area, resulting in 21 deaths.
