China strongly opposes the new US moves to put pressure on North Korea. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said it opposes the "long-arm authority" of the US administration.

Beijing also asserted that it has always fulfilled its international obligations to restrain neighboring North Korea, CNBC reported.

The US Treasury Department on August 22 announced new sanctions against 10 entities and six individuals, mostly from China and Russia, for helping North Korea in ways that support its missile and nuclear weapons programs. The US Treasury Department described the new sanctions as targeting companies and individuals from third countries.

The decision comes just weeks after Beijing and Moscow agreed to new UN sanctions against North Korea.

"China opposes unilateral sanctions outside the framework of the UN Security Council, especially long-arm jurisdiction, which is imposed by another country on Chinese organizations and individuals based on their domestic laws," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a press conference on August 23.

Arm's length jurisdiction is a term used to refer to the exercise of jurisdiction over foreign companies.

China's Global Times newspaper said the US would pay the price for its unfair ban on Chinese companies, arguing that the move was a serious violation of international law. "So far, the US sanctions have had little impact on China, but they break the rules and offend Beijing," it said.
