The Tianshan County online portal reported: "Today, thugs rammed a vehicle into a police station in Kargilik County, Kashgar Prefecture, Xinjiang, and detonated an explosion. Police acted decisively and shot dead 13 of the thugs."
The attack left three police officers injured, but caused no civilian casualties. Local authorities are investigating the incident.
Recently, China has witnessed a wave of attacks targeting police, government agencies, and civilians. Most of these attacks have occurred in the Xinjiang region.
Late last month, a suicide bombing in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, killed 39 people and injured more than 90. Immediately afterward, the Beijing authorities launched an anti-terrorism campaign in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which lasted until June 2015.
All political and legal forces, the military, and the armed police in Xinjiang have been mobilized for the campaign, which focuses on terrorist elements and religious extremist groups, explosives, and terrorist training camps.
Police here have dismantled 23 terrorist and religious extremist groups, arresting more than 200 suspects. Over 200 explosive devices were also seized during security raids. Many individuals convicted of terrorism and violence have been sentenced to death.
