(Baonghean) - On June 26, China accused the US of being "obsessed with gun displays" and engaging in racial discrimination, an action aimed at retaliating against US criticism of its human rights report.

In a lengthy report published by Xinhua News Agency, the information office of the Chinese State Council stated that the United States “violates human rights in other countries and has received numerous ‘red cards’ in the field of international human rights.”

On Thursday, June 25th, the U.S. State Department released its annual report on the human rights situation around the world. In the section on China, the U.S. stated that repression and coercion are common practices targeting activists, ethnic minorities, and law firms in sensitive cases. The State Department report was released as the U.S. and China held three days of high-level talks in Washington this week.

China rejects criticism regarding human rights and emphasizes its success in lifting millions out of poverty. The Chinese report, compiled primarily from American media reports, states that "racism is a chronic issue in the U.S. human rights report," adding that the U.S. suppresses the voting rights of ethnic minorities. The report also criticizes the U.S. for monitoring world leaders and civilians, and for allowing certain interest groups to influence government decision-making.

Human rights have long been a source of tension between the world's two largest economies, particularly since 1989, when the U.S. imposed sanctions on China.
