According to RIA Novosti, speaking at the meeting of BRICS foreign ministers in Nizhny Novgorod (Russia) on June 10, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that Beijing called for a peace conference on Ukraine, which would be recognized by both Moscow and Kiev.
“The Ukraine crisis continues, China supports the timely convening of a genuine peace conference recognized by both Russia and Ukraine, with equal participation of all parties and honest discussion of all peace plans,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry quoted Foreign Minister Wang Yi as saying.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi also said that it is necessary to strengthen determination to protect peace and security and create new momentum for political solutions to urgent problems.
Mr. Wang Yi also noted that, as history has repeatedly proven, Cold War thinking, confrontation between blocs and outside interference cannot solve problems, but can only lead to greater problems and crises.
“No matter how difficult the situation is, dialogue and consultation cannot be ignored. No matter how the conflict escalates, a political solution must be firmly adhered to,” said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
In addition, on the sidelines of the BRICS foreign ministers' meeting, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met. The Russian Foreign Minister expressed gratitude for Beijing's decision not to send a Chinese representative to the conference on Ukraine in Switzerland.
Moscow stressed that the event did not represent equal participation, as Russia was not invited to attend, as well as fair consideration of all peace initiatives and the current situation.
