The characters engraved on the gold and silver objects are still unclear, but archaeologists say the embossed motifs on the jewelry demonstrate the skillful and sophisticated craftsmanship of ancient craftsmen.
Archaeologist Li Boqian of Peking University said the items were extremely valuable to Chinese science, history and art, and would also play a significant role in the study of the political, economic, social and military life of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Archaeologists said they would continue excavating the area until April and expected to find more items.
The above area is where the peasant uprising leader Zhang Xianzhong was defeated by Ming soldiers in 1646. Legend has it that Zhang Xianzhong brought 1,000 boats carrying gold, silver, and jewels he had stolen to Lao Hu wharf, Jiangkou town, Pengshan district, when he was suddenly attacked by a Ming general, causing most of the boats to sink into the river./.
