The death toll from the bridge collapse in Gaozhou city, Guangdong province, southern China, has risen to 11 this morning (May 4). Local authorities said a bridge under construction in a village within the city collapsed at 1 p.m. yesterday (May 3, local time).

Chinese rescue workers pulled 27 people from the rubble of the collapsed bridge, five of whom were confirmed dead. Six others sustained serious injuries and later died in the hospital.

This was an illegal bridge construction project that had been suspended since April, but construction resumed during International Labor Day (May 1st). Police have arrested the bridge construction contractor and are investigating the cause of the accident.
