According to the Shanghai Daily, the Chinese government has determined that the current model is causing increasingly severe traffic congestion and pollution in Beijing, and damaging the capital's ancient relics. This is also part of Chinese President Xi Jinping's new urbanization strategy.

Over the past year, the Chinese government has been implementing the Jing-Jin-Ji plan to establish a metropolitan cluster of 130 million people with an area equivalent to that of Belarus.

Jing-Jin-Ji is a combination of three areas that this plan will cover: the capital Beijing, the neighboring city of Tianjin, and Hebei province, traditionally known as Ji.

The Beijing municipal government in Tongzhou will focus its efforts on connecting and developing the economies of the three regions, leaving the capital's center to central government ministries. Recently, property prices in Tongzhou have surged following news that the Beijing municipal government will relocate its headquarters there.
