China has sought a greater voice in global organizations such as the World Bank (WB), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the United Nations (UN), along with increasing its influence in the economic and diplomatic spheres.

Since taking power in late 2012, President Xi Jinping has taken a more assertive approach, establishing China's own global institutions, such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and launching the ambitious "Belt and Road" initiative to build a new Silk Road.

Speaking at the closing session of the two-day Communist Party of China summit, Xi Jinping affirmed that the country needs to “maintain the protection of the country’s sovereignty, security and development interests, actively participate in and lead the path of reforming the global governance system, and create a better global partnership network.”

This will help create conditions for building a strong, modern socialist nation, the Chinese Foreign Ministry quoted Mr. Xi as saying.

The Chinese leader's statement also proposed a "new style" in international relations, which is "win-win" and "beneficial" for all, but many Western countries still criticize China's behavior on many issues, including the East Sea issue.

President Xi Jinping stressed that China needs to strengthen ties with developing countries, which he described as close allies, but said Beijing also needs to learn from all other countries.

The Chinese leader did not directly mention issues such as the China-US trade dispute, North Korea or Taiwan./.
