China Daily on May 5 quoted a source from the Chinese Ministry of National Defense as saying that the China-Russia exercise will be held at the Russian Military Research Center in May. The exercise will help the two militaries familiarize themselves with the respective command structures and data transmission processes of the defense system.

The foreign ministers of China and Russia last week urged the United States and South Korea to abandon the deployment of the THAAD missile defense system, after North Korea conducted its fourth nuclear test on January 6 and continued missile tests in the following days.

The two countries on the Korean Peninsula are still in a state of "Cold War" since the 1953 armistice agreement. North Korea has recently frequently threatened to destroy South Korea and the United States.

US and South Korean officials have expressed concern that North Korea could conduct a fifth nuclear test to demonstrate its power ahead of its 7th Party Congress, which begins on May 6.

The White House said the US is still negotiating with South Korea about installing the THAAD defense system so as not to threaten the security of other countries.

Previously, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the missile defense system would tilt the balance on the Korean Peninsula, directly threatening the security strategies of China and Russia.

North Korea's development of its nuclear weapons program has angered China, although Beijing is Pyongyang's biggest diplomatic and economic ally. However, Chinese President Xi Jinping has insisted that Beijing will not allow war to break out on the Korean Peninsula.
