The first medical facility to treat infertility
Infertility (desire for children, infertility) is increasing and becoming more common in Vietnam today; becoming a burden for the health sector. A national study by the Central Obstetrics Hospital at Hanoi Medical University (published in 2015), the infertility rate of couples of childbearing age in Vietnam is 7.7%; meaning there are from 700 thousand to 1 million infertile couples. Of which, primary infertility accounts for 3.9% and secondary infertility is 3.8%. Alarmingly, about 50% of infertile couples are under 30 years old. According to the World Health Organization, the average infertility rate in the world is from 6% to 12%.
In fact, at the Department of Reproductive Support and Andrology - the Provincial Center for Reproductive Health Care (CSSKSS) receives about 180 patients each week for examination and treatment of diseases related to reproductive health. Among them, many patients and clients are infertile. According to Dr. CKI Nguyen Thi Hong - Head of the Department, there are many causes of infertility in both sexes.
On the male side, there may be abnormalities in sperm quality and quantity, hormonal deficiency, abnormalities in the structure of male genitals, genital infections... In women, due to abnormalities in the reproductive organs such as endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, the rest are other gynecological infections. In addition, inappropriate lifestyle (addiction to alcohol, tobacco...), hot, toxic working environment, unreasonable diet and rest, abortion, antibiotic abuse... also affect fertility.
Among the patients who come to the department for examination and treatment, 40% of the causes of infertility come from women, 40% of the cases are from men and 20% can be from both sides or the cause is unknown. For many reasons, this disease has robbed many couples of the sacred happiness when they cannot fulfill their role as fathers and mothers.

However, thanks to the advancement of science and technology, infertility treatment has been successfully carried out in many provinces and cities. In particular, in Nghe An, a densely populated province, people are concentrated in rural and mountainous areas, with difficult economic life, but they still have the opportunity to access good medical services and effective treatment methods for infertility when the Provincial Center for Reproductive Health Care, the first medical unit in Nghe An, implemented infertility treatment methods nearly 20 years ago. Previously, the artificial insemination method (IUI) was combined with the Paraclinical Department. In the past 3 years, the Center has established the Department of Reproductive Support - Andrology specializing in the treatment of this disease.
At the same time, the Center focuses on investing in facilities with a system of bacteriological examination machines, X-rays, ultrasounds, sperm washing centrifuges, microscopes, sperm counting chambers, storage cabinets, etc. At the same time, it invests in purchasing chemicals from the US and Japan at high costs to serve the treatment of diseases. The team of doctors is well-trained (most of them have university and postgraduate degrees); highly specialized in infertility and andrology and artificial insemination methods. Doctors are often sent to attend training courses at major hospitals in Hanoi to improve their expertise in treating infertility.
Artificial insemination successful for hundreds of infertility cases
Not only successfully treating reproductive diseases, the most remarkable achievement of the provincial Center for Reproductive Health Care in recent times is the effective implementation of the method of treating infertility and sterility by artificial insemination (IUI). Thanks to the effective implementation of the IUI method, the center has successfully treated and brought happiness to hundreds of infertile couples.
As in the case of Ms. Nguyen Thi Lien's family (Dien Yen commune, Dien Chau district), she and her husband have been married for 3 years but still have no children. They have examined everywhere but the treatment costs are high, the family cannot afford to pay. Ms. Lien and her husband came to the Center for treatment at the Center's Department of Reproductive Support and Andrology, where, after being examined and diagnosed by doctors, artificial insemination was applied. After more than 4 months of treatment at the center, Ms. Lien received the good news that she was pregnant with her first child. Ms. Lien happily shared: "My husband and I were lucky to be treated by the doctors at the center, successfully performing artificial insemination, now our wish to have a child to continue the family line has been fulfilled."

Similarly, the family of Ms. Ngo Thi Thu Thao (Hung Dung ward, Vinh city), after more than 2 years of waiting for a child, was consulted and treated by doctors with the IUI method, and the couple gave birth to a baby. As for the family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Yen (Nghi Phu commune, Vinh city), after 5 years of visiting and receiving treatment in many places but without success. After being treated by doctors at the Provincial Center for Reproductive Health Care, the family happily welcomed their first child. This is typical among hundreds of cases welcoming the happiness of becoming parents for the first time after many years of waiting due to infertility and sterility that were successfully treated at the Provincial Center for Reproductive Health Care.
Doctor CKI Hoang Thi Thu - Deputy Director of the Provincial Center for Reproductive Health Care said: According to the topic "Some comments on patients treated for infertility by IUI method at Nghe An Reproductive Health Care Center from January to September 2016", the rate of infertility treatment by IUI method at the Center reached 10% to 15%. To improve the effectiveness of infertility treatment by IUI method, in the coming time, the Center needs to strengthen staff training to improve the level of sperm washing techniques, sperm injection techniques; equip standard rooms (sterile, closed).
With remarkable successes in the field of infertility treatment in particular and reproductive diseases, the Provincial Center for Reproductive Health Care has become a prestigious and reliable address attracting more and more patients. According to statistics, in the first 6 months of 2017, the Department of Reproductive Support and Andrology received 2,958 patients for examination and treatment of reproductive diseases (an increase of nearly 300 cases compared to the same period). With the orientation of improving the quality of services and treatment effectiveness; creating conditions for the poor to access quality medical services, the Provincial Center for Reproductive Health Care needs to be supported to invest in more modern equipment and train human resources.
At the same time, coordinate with specialized hospitals (Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, Obstetrics Department of Provincial General Hospital) to improve the effectiveness of infertility treatment by IUI method. The Center's orientation is to coordinate with provincial obstetrics facilities to implement IVF method in infertility treatment.
