In response to Ukraine's anger, CNN changes caption under photo Simferopol - Russia
CNN TV channel has removed the reference to Simferopol as part of the Russian Federation in its publication. This was announced on the channel's website.
The issue in question is the photo collection "New Year's Celebrations Around the World". The mention of Russia was removed under the photo of New Year's fireworks in Simferopol, replaced by a caption expressing the views of Western countries on the situation in Crimea.
The Ukrainian Embassy in the United States had previously expressed anger at the photo, which referred to Simferopol as a Russian city, and called on the American press to "verify the truth more clearly".
Crimea became part of Russia in March 2014 following a referendum held after the coup in Ukraine. More than 96% of the peninsula's residents voted in favor of unification with Russia.
