Vocational school sends blue-plate cars to recruit students from home but still cannot meet the quota
(Baonghean) - SchoolCollege of Economics and Technology No. 1 currently has only 70 registered students, but according to the school's 'experience', it is unlikely that even one student will come to complete the procedures.
The hardships of vocational school admissions season
At this point, universities already know how many applications they have, while vocational schools are sitting on a “fire pit” waiting for their candidates. Admissions are also somewhat “passive” when the source of admissions is based on only two groups: students who are streamed and students who are not admitted to universities.
The No. 1 College of Economics and Technology under the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor has less than 400 quotas each year, but the enrollment process is still extremely difficult. The school even has to use a blue-plate car to increase its reputation when going to candidates' homes to do enrollment work, but up to this point, the quota for 2017 has not been completed.
Mr. Tran Ngoc Quang - Vice Principal of the school said: "After nearly 4 months of enrollment, the school has had about 70 students register. However, that is in theory, in reality, sometimes no student comes to complete the procedures."

Having worked at the Vietnam-Germany Industrial Vocational College for nearly 30 years, Mr. Pham Trong Tho - Vice Principal of the school also affirmed: "This is the most difficult time for enrollment. Previously, during the enrollment season, it was normal for the school's training department to receive dozens of applications each day.
But currently, even though we have to “go to every house and check every candidate”, the enrollment target is still very “unstable”, many majors such as construction, electricity and water, accounting can only recruit a few students a year. This year, we have consulted over 40 high schools but the number of applications is very limited, in many localities such as Yen Thanh, we have never recruited students”.
Currently, Nghe An has about 10,000 secondary school students and nearly 10,000 high school students who are only admitted to graduate school each year, but the number of students admitted to vocational schools is very small. According to Mr. Quang, the reason why vocational schools have not "reached" many of these students is because most of them, after finishing school, just want to work or study abroad while working.
Besides, the recruitment mechanism is not attractive. Currently, many businesses in the province prefer to recruit unskilled workers rather than skilled workers, because they can be flexible in using labor and they only have to pay low wages.
Meanwhile, vocational students have to spend a lot of time training but are not properly employed and paid according to their level.
Difficulty from students
In 2017, the Law on Vocational Education officially came into effect. This was also the first year that vocational training institutions operated under the management of the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs.
The biggest difference after this change is that after many years, vocational schools no longer appear on the list of wishes on candidates' application files, because they do not share the same admission system with the Ministry of Education and Training. This also makes students confused when registering for vocational schools, because data and information about the vocational school system is very limited.
Student Luong Van Huyen - Class 12A8, Que Phong High School, registered for vocational school this year, but apart from some schools that came to Huyen's High School for consultation, he did not have any other data. Many friends also advised Huyen to go online to find information, but each school had different information, Huyen did not know which information was official and which was fake.
Huyen said: "Previously, through the book "Things to know", we had a system of vocational schools to choose from, thanks to which we had full information about industries, occupations, and quotas. Currently, the whole country has more than 1,000 vocational schools, but the more there are, the more "noise" we are when there is no specific orientation.
There are no instructions on how to submit application and admission procedures. Currently, high schools do not collect application forms for vocational schools, so students must register and submit their applications themselves. The inconvenient travel process will make students less interested in vocational training and look for other easier ways, especially how to quickly earn income.
Mr. Hoang Sy Tuyen - Head of Vocational Training Department - Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs expressed his opinion: The Law on Vocational Education is opening up many opportunities for vocational training institutions and learners. However, to receive these opportunities, schools must also mobilize themselves and increase their autonomy. If innovation is slow, it will fall behind, affecting the quality of training and in the long term, it will have a negative impact on the reputation, brand and enrollment of schools.
