Volcano Slope Slide: A Fun for the 'Fearless'
Despite the life-threatening danger that can strike at any time, adventurous tourists still try their hand at surfing, sliding down the volcano's slopes at speeds of up to 95 km/h.
Cerro Negro is an active volcano in Nicaragua, which can be dangerous for any tourist, but has its own charm. One of the activities that attracts tourists to Cerro Negro is the challenge of skateboarding from the crater to the bottom.
The slope is almost vertical. And the “daredevil” sits on a ski, drifting down, flying with the volcanic ash at speeds of up to 95 km/h.

Back in 2004, a young man risked his life by climbing into a mini-fridge taken from a hotel, sitting on it, and sliding down. Since then, this adventurous act has inspired tens of thousands of tourists to try the thrill and gradually become a trend when coming to Cerro Negro volcano.

Because the slope is gentle, with some sections being almost vertical, people call it the “death slide”. To stop, players can only use their feet to brake to gradually reduce speed.
Before participating, players must wear thick protective clothing to help the body withstand sudden accidents, wear glasses to observe the road when rushing down at high speed. Besides, players can be injured because volcanic cinders can erupt suddenly. Although very dangerous, Cerro Negro still receives support from speed enthusiasts.

Currently, ash boarding is the only form of tourism that exists only in Nicaragua. Each tourist costs about 30 USD for a challenging experience.

Cerro Negro is the youngest volcano in Central America. It has erupted 23 times since 1850. The last eruption was in 1999, just five years before the skateboarding craze began.
