The 6-minute video shows a 14-kg gray-bodied, brown-legged langur tied up in the middle of the yard and then slaughtered with a hammer, knife, and boiling water. The killing of the langur was filmed in a private home, with several men participating.
According to Mr. Nguyen Quang Hao, Head of Huong Khe Forestry Department, the above langur is a rare primate species that is being strictly preserved in Vietnam and the world, and exploitation and use for commercial purposes are strictly prohibited.
"We have received the video, but there are many types of langurs, so we need to verify it carefully," said Mr. Hao.
Previously in December 2016, Ha Tinh Forest Rangers administratively fined a 12th grade male student in Huong Khe district for using a homemade alcohol gun to hunt wild birds, then posting pictures of him torturing monkeys and deer on his Facebook for "fun".
Article 244 of the 2015 Penal Code stipulates that anyone who hunts, kills, raises, confines; transports, stores, transports, or trades animals on the list of endangered or rare species... shall be fined from VND 500,000 to VND 2,000,000 or imprisoned from 1 to 5 years.
