Media discovers secret FBI source in Trump campaign headquarters

The FBI's secret source in investigating the Russian Federation's relationship with staff in the election team of current US President Donald Trump is former CIA agent Stefan Halper, Intercept magazine wrote.

This conclusion was drawn based on analysis of previous posts in the US media about the anonymous secret source at the request of the FBI.

The New York Times earlier cited sources as saying that the informant was a former government official who taught in the UK, was well-known in Washington and had also previously been a source of information for the CIA.

At the FBI's request, the source met with agents George Papadopoulos and Carter Page to find out if they were collaborating with Russia.

As noted by the Intercept, Halper currently teaches at the University of Cambridge. Furthermore, the newspaper notes that Stefan Halper was allegedly involved in the 1980 presidential election “espionage scandal,” when President Ronald Reagan’s campaign, through CIA agents in contact with Halper, was found to be spying on the Jimmy Carter administration.

"So, it turns out, the source the FBI bribed in 2016 to gather information about the Trump campaign, supposedly someone previously unknown, was a top-secret figure whose disclosure would put someone's life at risk.

Quite the opposite: he worked in the CIA for decades, his unethical, if not criminal, role in espionage during the 1980 election campaign… was widely known" - the article concluded.
