Reproductive health communication for students in mountainous areas

(Baonghean.vn) - On the afternoon of October 5, in Que Phong district, the Department of Population and Family Planning organized a communication and consultation session on reproductive health care for adolescents/youth.

The program had the participation of 285 students from Thong Thu Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities. During the 2 hours, the students listened to and shared content revolving around reproductive health issues.

That is, physical and psychological changes in adolescence; consequences of unsafe sex, teenage pregnancy; reproductive tract infections - sexually transmitted diseases; some skills to prevent sexual abuse.

In addition to organizing extracurricular activities to talk about topics, provide and exchange information, students also receive direct advice on reproductive health care and play games.

This is part of the plan to organize reproductive health education classes for secondary school students, especially girls, implemented by the Department of Population and Family Planning in 2017.

Thereby, helping students understand and have positive behaviors in reproductive health care, gender equality, skills to prevent sexual abuse and improve social skills, cultural behaviors in school age.

As planned, the program will be implemented in 10 secondary schools in Nghi Loc, Dien Chau, Que Phong districts and Thai Hoa town; at the end of the program, about 90 - 95% of students participating in the program will understand basic knowledge about reproductive health care.

Thong Thu Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities is located in a border commune of Que Phong district, adjacent to Vieng Phan village cluster, Xam Tay district, Hua Phan province, Lao People's Democratic Republic. The school has 285 students, all of whom are ethnic minorities. About 80% of the students are boarding students at the school.
