Claiming to have 'accomplished his mission', Georgian Prime Minister hastily resigns after 1 year in power
Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze unexpectedly announced his resignation on September 2, more than a year after he was appointed head of the Georgian government.
Mr. Bakhtadze said that his main goal and task upon his appointment as Prime Minister of Georgia in 2018 was to create and implement a strategic development framework to ensure the achievement of the country's goals in the coming years.
He said that now a strategic framework had been created and implemented, so he decided to step down because he believed he had "fulfilled his mission in this period".

Mr. Bakhtadze was approved by the parliament as prime minister in June 2018. At that time, he pledged to implement liberal reforms and push for Georgia to become a member of the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
He stressed that this is a key task in Georgia's foreign policy and is very important for the country's security and stable development.
The Georgian Prime Minister's announcement of his resignation and his assertion that he had "accomplished his mission" surprised many. In fact, Georgia's entry into the EU and NATO is still far away.
