On October 23, Nghe An Provincial People's Court opened a first-instance criminal trial of defendant Le Dang Thanh (born in 1970, residing in Nghi Xuan district, Ha Tinh province) for the crimes of "Illegal trading of narcotics" and "Illegal possession of military weapons".
Previously, on February 24, 2018, Thanh was arrested by the mobile police for illegal possession of drugs and handed over to Vinh City Police for investigation and handling according to their authority. Thanh was released on bail to serve the investigation due to poor health (subject infected with HIV).
On April 20, 2018, a man named Muoi (Thanh's drug addict friend in Ho Chi Minh City) called Thanh to order heroin. The two sides agreed on a price of 180 million VND/cake, Thanh had to bring it to Muoi.
Muoi transferred 630 million VND to Thanh in advance. Thanh added 570 million VND to make 1.2 billion VND, which was converted to 60,000 USD to buy drugs. Thanh bought 12 heroin cakes from a man in Laos (identity unknown), priced at 150 million VND/cake, paying 60,000 USD in advance.
On the morning of May 3, Thang brought a loaded K59 gun to the Cau Treo border gate to receive the "goods". When Le Dang Thanh brought the goods to Son Tay commune (Huong Son district, Ha Tinh), he was arrested by Nghe An provincial police and all evidence was confiscated.
In June 2018, the People's Court of Vinh City brought Le Dang Thanh to trial and sentenced him to 7 years in prison for "Illegal possession of narcotics". Previously, in 2015, Thanh was sentenced to 24 months in prison by the People's Court of Ha Tinh Province for "Extortion of property". In 2016, this defendant was sentenced to 12 months in prison by the People's Court of Vinh City for "Illegal possession of narcotics".
At the trial on October 23, defendant Thanh admitted all his crimes. Considering that the amount of drugs he bought and sold was very large, his personal history was bad, his criminal behavior was especially dangerous, and he was a repeat offender..., the panel sentenced Le Dang Thanh to death for "Illegal drug trafficking" and 7 years in prison for "Illegal possession of military weapons".
Combined with the 7-year prison sentence for "Illegal possession of narcotics" that has not been executed, Le Dang Thanh must serve a total sentence of death.
