From mixed garden to fruit garden of CCB Anh Son

(Baonghean.vn) - Implementing the policy of eliminating mixed gardens and planting high-value fruit trees, the Association of War Veterans in Binh Son commune, Anh Son district has developed a project to transform mixed gardens into specialized fruit gardens and has initially brought about effectiveness, contributing to shifting the crop structure, maximizing production efficiency and improving the lives of members.

Veteran Nguyen Dinh Nhi, village 3, Binh Son commune, is the pioneer in implementing the project of transforming mixed gardens into fruit orchards of the association of veterans, bringing high economic efficiency. Next to the lemon garden in the main season full of fruit, Mr. Nhi happily confided: Before, the family's economic life was very difficult, his family had 2 hectares of land in the Cam hill, due to lack of guidance and proper arrangement, so they planted many types of trees but did not bring efficiency.

After the policy of eliminating mixed gardens, he re-planned the garden; learned about farming models in many places and realized that the economic efficiency from lemon trees was very high, the investment capital was not much, the care techniques were simple, so he chose lemon trees to start his business.

The orange garden of veteran Nguyen Huu Tam, each tree earns from 1 to 3 million VND, has helped his family's life improve a lot.

Initially, with limited capital, he only planted 55 lemon trees on a trial basis in 2012. After a while, realizing that lemon trees were very suitable for the land here, he invested in planting 145 more trees in 2014. After a few years of harvesting, from last year until now, his lemon garden has entered a stable harvesting cycle.

Currently, on average, each lemon tree yields 50-60kg per year, and each harvest yields 200kg. With prices ranging from 10,000-12,000 VND/kg of fresh lemon, more than 200 lemon trees have brought in an income of 50-80 million VND per year.

With CCB Nguyen Huu Tam in hamlet 3, Binh Son renovated the mixed garden and planted 140 orange trees. After 4 years, 30 trees were harvested. Mr. Tam said: "In 2009, I and some families in the commune tried to grow some citrus fruit trees. At first, I didn't have much experience, so I had to attend classes organized by the commune and consult books and newspapers, which brought success to my family."

Mr. Tam calculated: In 2015, with the price of oranges at the source at 50,000 VND/kg, his family earned an average of 1-3 million VND per tree. The income from oranges has helped his family's life improve a lot.

Currently, the Association of War Veterans in Binh Son commune has 32 effective economic models, including 18 models of renovating mixed gardens with orange and lemon trees, typically the models of members Hoang Dang Hoa in branch 5, Nguyen Van Vinh in branch 15, Nguyen Dinh Nhi, Nguyen Huu Tam in branch 3, Nguyen Van Cung in branch 1, with an annual income of 50-80 million VND.

During the 2015-2020 term, the Binh Son Veterans Association continues to implement the project of renovating the planning of mixed gardens into high-income economic gardens with the economic value of the garden reaching 60-90 models, generating an income of 150-300 million VND. Focusing on varieties of royal lemons, thornless lemons, hybrid grapefruits, hybrid apples, dragon fruits, bananas of all kinds, and intercropping other short-term crops.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hoan - Chairman of the Association of War Veterans in Binh Son commune said: To effectively implement the project of eliminating mixed gardens to increase income for members, the Association of War Veterans in Binh Son commune has organized a survey of the current status of members' gardens; annually, coordinates with specialized sectors to open training courses on transferring science and technology; contacts and trades with plant breeding stations to bring varieties of quality and efficiency suitable to local climate and soil conditions. Thanks to the implementation and good implementation of the project, the members' lives have been significantly improved. In 2015, the poverty rate of the Association of War Veterans in Binh Son commune decreased from 0.13% to only 0.07%.
