Tuan Vu was born and raised in Phan Thiet City in a poor family so he did not have the opportunity to attend any music school. However, with his warm and emotional voice, Tuan Vu was able to join the church's choir.

But in 1979, Tuan Vu followed an aunt to America. At first, it was difficult, he did many jobs to make a living such as: fishing, welding, refrigeration, enameling,... life was extremely difficult. However, with an artistic, romantic and adventurous spirit, Tuan Vu was always optimistic and sang loudly everywhere, even when he was fishing outside or when he was home alone.
Wandering around the sea when not at sea, Tuan Vu raised his voice to sing and coincidentally, singer Truc Mai was also walking on the sea at that time and heard his voice, visited him and asked if he would sing on stage? Of course, Tuan Vu immediately seized the opportunity and from then on was mentored by Truc Mai and many others such as Giao Linh, Nhat Truong, Phuong Mai. The stage name Tuan Vu came from that because the real name of the "fisherman" is Nguyen Van Tai.
Sky-high salary, once became a millionaire but lost everything overnight
At that time, being warmly welcomed, the overseas music sky began to shine with another young star - Tuan Vu. His solo album "Gui ve em" was released to every corner of California, to Europe, to Vietnam... In the years 1985 - 1989, at his peak, Tuan Vu could earn up to 1,000 USD for each recorded song and recorded dozens of songs like that every month.

Having money was welcomed, Tuan Vu bought houses, cars, gathered friends, and threw himself into entertainment. He believed that friends should keep all the money they earned, and then overnight, Tuan Vu lost everything and was kicked out of the house in great pain. His friends turned Tuan Vu from a millionaire to a penniless person.
Faced with the shock, Tuan Vu was bitter and disappointed. Losing faith in his friends and in life, he gave up singing and lived quietly for 4 years. The price he had to pay was so high that he tortured himself by turning to alcohol to punish himself.
Back to the stage
At the age of 30, Tuan Vu married a Chinese woman. His married life changed him as he had a loving wife and a beautiful son. However, that marriage was broken due to an incident.
Tuan Vu said that his wife's family did not want him to sing anymore but to manage their family's mini market. When faced with the choice between singing and a market, Tuan Vu chose singing after much struggle. The marriage broke down and Tuan Vu was once again lonely, once again lost his family and gave up singing for another 4 years.
After the divorce, Tuan Vu took responsibility for raising his son. He loved and cared for his son very much and kept in touch with his wife so that his son could receive enough love from both his father and mother.

Tuan Vu returned to singing in 2000, which was also the time he returned to Vietnam.
