Honda scooter airbags provide breakthrough safety for drivers

Honda has demonstrated the superior safety protection of airbags mounted on scooters, promising to significantly reduce casualties in two-wheeled vehicle traffic accidents.

There is no denying that riding motorcycles and scooters is dangerous, so two-wheeler manufacturers have been constantly looking for ways to improve safety for riders. In this effort, Honda Motor has recently introduced a two-wheeler airbag, designed specifically for scooters.

Airbags were tested on Honda PCX scooters.

The airbag is manufactured in conjunction with the safety systems supplier Autoliv, and is capable of protecting the driver's head in specific collision situations, especially collisions with cars. Normally, if a scooter collides with a car from the front, the car will pull the scooter, causing the driver to be seriously injured.

Honda’s airbag system for two-wheelers will work like airbags for cars, with an evaluation sensor mounted on the front bumper of the scooter to detect an impact and deploy the airbag within just 0.04 – 0.05 seconds. In a recent safety test at a speed of 50 km/h, Honda found that the airbag deployed sandwiched between the scooter and the vehicle, significantly reducing the impact on the dummy’s head.

Previously, the Goldwing GL 1800 motorcycle model also tested this type of device.

In addition, airbags also protect against impact from the side of the scooter or in the event of a scooter rollover. “In many sudden motorcycle accidents, a motorcycle often collides with the side of a car. Therefore, airbags can reduce the number of casualties in accidents,” Honda said.

Honda has previously demonstrated airbag safety technology on its flagship cruiser, the Honda Goldwing GL 1800. Other safety solutions with airbags mounted on motorcycles or scooters have also been proposed, such as airbags integrated into the rider’s clothing such as the Dainese D-Air or Alpinestars Tech-Air systems.
