Former Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Igor Romanenko, stated that to counter Russia Kiev needs missiles "that can reach at least the Urals region".

The general expressed his opinion in a conversation with the Ukrainian newspaper “Glavred”.

After the signing of the Budapest Memorandum, Ukraine was deprived not only of nuclear weapons, but also of missile weapons, Mr. Romanenko complained. “We only had the old Tochka-U missiles with a range of 120 km. And now we are suffering the consequences of this approach,” he noted.

Currently, tests of similar weapons "are making progress", but Kiev is still subject to restrictions related to the missile's range, the general said.

“Ukraine needs missiles that can reach at least the Urals and cover the entire territory of the Russian Federation. Such missiles can be considered a deterrent,” Romanenko concluded.

Last week, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said Kiev possessed cruise missiles with a destructive radius of more than 1,000km. According to military expert Alexei Podberezkin, the “new” missiles threaten Ukraine itself more than anyone else.
