Sentenced man who poured gasoline on his colleague to set him on fire because of debt
(Baonghean.vn) - Thinking that Mr. S. borrowed money and promised many times but did not pay, during the fight, Dinh Khac Quy poured gasoline and set fire, causing the victim to suffer burns all over his body.
On April 15, Nghe An Provincial People's Court opened a first-instance criminal trial of defendant Dinh Khac Quy (born 1992), residing in Dong Vinh ward, Vinh city, for the crime of "Murder".
Dinh Khac Quy and Mr. Pham Ngoc S. (born in 1994), residing in Hung Loc commune, Vinh city, are friends and used to work together. In March 2020, Quy lent Mr. S. 2.5 million VND.

After that, Quy repeatedly asked his friend to pay, and S. promised to pay on July 6, 2020. As scheduled, Quy went to S.'s workplace to collect the debt. On the way, Quy bought about 1.5 liters of gasoline to fill up for his mother.
At around 2:30 p.m. the same day, S. left the company and saw Quy, but because he was afraid of being beaten, he drove away. Seeing S. leave, Quy chased after her on his motorbike. The two sides then exchanged words and then started fighting. Some passersby tried to stop them.
Thinking that the incident had stopped, Quy took gasoline, poured it on S. and set it on fire. S. lay struggling on the ground and was put out by people and taken to the emergency room. The victim suffered burns all over his body, with a body injury rate of 68% at the time of assessment.
As for Dinh Khac Quy, he went to the police station at 7:30 p.m. the same day.surrender.
At the trial, defendant Quy admitted to his crime. The defendant said that because he repeatedly demanded debt from S. but S. did not pay, and was beaten, he could not control himself. Dinh Khac Quy said he did not intend to kill anyone.
The victim explained that Quy had made her life miserable, and so far the total amount of money spent on treatment has been more than 1 billion VND.
The panel of judges determined that the defendant's actions were cruel and that the victim's death was beyond the defendant's subjective intention.
In this case, the defendant had some mitigating circumstances such as honest confession, repentance, and his family had partially compensated the victim.
Considering the case in its entirety, the panel sentenced Dinh Khac Quy to 16 years in prison for "Murder". The defendant was ordered to compensate the victim more than 1 billion VND.
