During Monday’s North American session, the EUR/USD pair was under pressure around the intraday high of 1.1340. Despite a strong early-day rally, the pair struggled to sustain gains as the US dollar rallied on upbeat economic data.

Specifically, the US ISM services PMI index in April reached 51.6, higher than the forecast of 50.6 and the previous period's 50.8, showing a strong expansion in the service sector. In addition, the New Orders index also increased to 52.3 from 50.4. The Employment index, although slightly down to 49.0, was still higher than the March reading of 46.2. Overall, the PMI data provided a boost to the USD, pushing the DXY index up from 99.45 to nearly 99.70.

The USD has previously faced selling pressure due to lingering concerns about US-China trade tensions and the expectation of the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision. Over the weekend, President Donald Trump expressed the possibility of signing bilateral trade agreements with several countries this week. However, he affirmed that there was no dialogue with Chinese President Xi Jinping, but did not rule out the possibility that negotiations were still taking place quietly.

While the possibility of a trade deal could ease tariff concerns, investors remain cautious as tensions between the world’s two largest economies show no signs of easing. The focus this week will be on the Fed’s monetary policy meeting on Wednesday. The Fed is expected to keep interest rates unchanged at 4.25% to 4.50%, but all eyes will be on Chairman Jerome Powell’s speech for clues on the path of future interest rates.

Better-than-expected non-farm payrolls (NFP) data and inflationary pressures due to Mr Trump's new tariff policies could also make the Fed more cautious in considering cutting interest rates.
