Japanese Yen exchange rate today May 10, 2025: Japanese Yen slightly increased again after the US dollar (USD) weakened ahead of important trade negotiations between the US and China

JPY/USD exchange rate today 5/10/2025

The USD/JPY pair corrected lower to 145.14 after failing to sustain gains above a near one-month high of 146.20 reached earlier in the day. The correction came amid weakness in the US dollar (USD), as investors turned cautious ahead of crucial trade talks between the US and China on Saturday.

The US dollar index (DXY), which measures the greenback's strength against a basket of six major currencies, also turned lower, retreating to 100.32 after rising sharply in the previous session.

Investors are closely following developments in the US-China meeting, as the prolonged tariff war between the world's two largest economies has caused experts to continuously revise down their global economic growth prospects and that of the US itself.

Ahead of the negotiations, President Donald Trump unexpectedly posted on the Truth Social platform that the 80% tariff on Chinese goods was “reasonable”, but also left open the possibility of reducing the tariff if an agreement was reached, depending on Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

The US dollar was previously well supported by the US Federal Reserve's statement on Wednesday that it was in no hurry to cut interest rates, as well as news of a preliminary trade deal between the US and the UK – the first deal after the White House announced new tax policies.

On the other hand, the Japanese Yen (JPY) has increased in value compared to many other currencies in the last session of the week, due to the increased demand for safe havens amid the international trade situation. The preference for JPY clearly reflects the cautious sentiment of investors in the face of major risk events.
