The People's Committee of Vinh City responds to the issue raised in the press.
(Baonghean) - The Nghe An Newspaper, in its June 20, 2014 issue, published an article titled "There is a forgotten cemetery for Southern soldiers in Nghe An," reflecting that many graves of Southern cadres and soldiers who relocated to the North and are buried in the Mu Nuoi hamlet, Hung Dung ward, are not being regularly cared for. Following the publication of the article, on July 25, 2014, the Vinh City People's Committee issued Official Letter No. 3541/UBND.VP responding as follows:
During the years 1954-1964, a medical clinic was established in Hung Dung commune (now Hung Dung ward) to provide healthcare for people who had relocated from the South to the North. Throughout the war against the US, many cadres from the South who had relocated to the North passed away and were buried in the Mu Nuoi area of Hung Dung ward, which the locals commonly referred to as the Southern Cemetery.
Every year, these graves are cared for and honored with incense by the Association of Southern Compatriots in Nghe An. However, in recent years, the Association of Southern Compatriots has become old and declining. According to statistics, there are currently 221 graves of cadres, soldiers, and children from the South who relocated to the North. Of these, 2 graves have tombstones inscribed with "martyr," 24 are regularly cared for by relatives, 152 have names and addresses, and 43 graves are of unknown name and address.
Following the publication of the article, on June 23, 2014, the General Corporation for Construction of Transportation Works No. 4 sent Official Letter No. 11764/TCT-BTH to the People's Committee of Nghe An Province regarding the registration for the restoration and maintenance of the Southern Cemetery in Hung Dung Ward, Vinh City. On June 27, 2014, the People's Committee of Nghe An Province issued Document No. 4469/UBND-ĐTXD agreeing to allow the General Corporation for Construction of Transportation Works No. 4 to undertake the responsibility for the restoration, renovation, and maintenance of the Southern Cemetery in Hung Dung Ward, Vinh City. To date, the Construction Corporation No. 4 has coordinated with the People's Committee of Hung Dung Ward, the People's Committee of Vinh City, and the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Nghe An Province to implement the steps for repairing, restoring, and caring for the graves of cadres, soldiers, and children from the South who were relocated. The Construction Corporation No. 4 held a groundbreaking ceremony to commence the restoration and repair work on July 24, 2014.
