Speaking at the International Maritime Security Conference in Odessa, Admiral Igor Voronchenko, Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Navy, criticized that Russia has significantly increased the combat capabilities of the Black Sea Fleet by increasing the presence of aircraft carriers carrying "Calibre" cruise missiles.

"Since 2014, Russia has significantly increased the combat potential of the Black Sea Fleet and new submarines carrying attack missiles such as the long-range cruise missile Caliber. Currently, the number of these missiles is 72, and it is expected to reach 168 missiles by the end of the year," said Mr. Voronchenko.

According to the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Navy, Russia has created a regionally renowned anti-ship defense system, as well as strengthened its air defense system with new-generation S-400 equipment, and strengthened its air forces through the supply of new-generation fighters and bombers.

For Kiev, in the face of these "threats", Mr. Voronchenko needs to restore the naval potential of the Ukrainian Fleet, especially promoting strategic cooperation with countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

The Caliber cruise missile is planned to be developed by Russia to equip the latest generation of Ash 88585 multi-purpose nuclear submarines. The Caliber's operating range is about 2,500 km.

Previously, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko stated that security in the Black Sea is maintained and guaranteed based on cooperation of countries in the region.

"All countries involved have a responsibility to ensure security. In addition to economic cooperation in the Black Sea, in the military sphere, this cooperation is seen as a measure to build mutual trust here," Deputy Minister Grushko said, pointing out that NATO's increased military activities in the Black Sea are undermining the stability of the region. This will lead to a response from Moscow.
