Ukraine 'surrenders' to smart bombs, Russia determined to find Kremlin attackers
Ukraine says it needs longer-range weapons like F-16 fighters to counter Russia's smart bombers.
Colonel Yury Ignat, spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force, recently admitted that Kiev has no way to counter Russia's high-precision guided bombs, while reiterating a long-standing request to be supported by modern US fighters.
RT news agency reported that Mr. Ignat said that Russia launches 20 guided bombs on the front line every day. According to Ukrainian officials, the Russian munitions can fly about 70km and attack important infrastructure, among other targets.

“We cannot defend against this type of ammunition, and the air defense system is also ineffective,” Mr. Ignat emphasized, adding that to prevent such attacks, Ukraine must have fighters such as Su-34, Su-35, and many other tactical aircraft.
Ukraine also needs a weapon that can reach the enemy at a greater distance than the current weapons, according to Mr. Ignat. According to him, one of the longest-range air defense weapons Kiev possesses is the Soviet-era S-300 missile system, capable of attacking targets at a distance of up to 100km. The official added that Ukraine's air defense capabilities have also been enhanced by Western-made weapons with a range of 150km, but these weapons are increasingly in short supply.
To solve the problem, Mr. Ignat said the West needs to equip Ukraine with modern fighters.
“F-16 fighters can effectively deal with Russian aircraft along the edge of the war zone,” Mr. Ignat said, adding that these planes can also prevent Russian aircraft from approaching the Ukrainian border.
However, in February, US President Joe Biden declared that Ukraine “does not need F-16s at this time”. According to Mr. Biden, the US is focusing on supporting Kiev with tanks and artillery.
Russia determined to find the culprit of the Kremlin attack
The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that the country's law enforcement agencies are fully capable of finding and charging those who launched the drone attack on the Kremlin.
“Such crimes cannot be ignored,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on May 4, adding that the perpetrators would face “severe and inevitable punishment.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry asserted that “the Kiev government” was behind the attack on the Kremlin, as Ukraine “has been deliberately supporting and using terrorist measures against civilian infrastructure and the population for a long time.”
Accordingly, the Russian Foreign Ministry cited the Crimean Bridge bombing in October 2022. However, the Ukrainian government denied being the mastermind behind the bridge sabotage, which claimed the lives of three civilians. Kiev also rejected Moscow's accusations regarding the UAV attack on the Kremlin on May 3.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the latest incident shows that Kiev is not interested in peace, and Russia needs to continue carrying out its military campaign in Ukraine./.
