Ukraine angry after CNN calls Simferopol Russian
Ukraine has always sought support from the West and the media on the Crimean peninsula issue but this time it failed.
The Ukrainian Embassy in the United States recently expressed its dissatisfaction with the New Year's report of the American television channel CNN for calling the city of Simferopol in Crimea a part of Russian territory in its report. The Ukrainian Embassy wrote on Twitter: "We hope that our CNN friends will verify the truth and choose the content more clearly. Simferopol is a Ukrainian city on the Crimean peninsula occupied by Russia."

The CNN report was referring to New Year's Eve celebrations around the world, including a photo captioned "Fireworks light up the center of Simferopol, Russia."
The Twitter account of the Russian diplomatic mission in Crimea tweeted its thanks to CNN for the information. "Thank you CNN for your congratulations. Crimea is Russia. Happy New Year," the post said. The Russian Embassy in Canada and the Russian Embassy in the United States also sent similar thanks to CNN's report.
Many people commented on the post of the Ukrainian Embassy in the US "reminding" CNN about the political place name information in the Crimean Peninsula. There were mixed reactions to the tweet of the Ukrainian diplomatic mission. Most Twitter users who commented on the post of the Ukrainian Ambassador to the US thanked CNN for the information that the city of Simferopol in the Crimean Peninsula belongs to Russia.
For example, user Serge Kuzmichev said: "CNN only tells the truth. Just accept it and calm down. Crimea made its choice. Your occupation of Crimea finally ended in 2014." Another user alluded to comments by US President Donald Trump, calling CNN one of the channels broadcasting fake news.
Crimea rejoined Russia in 2014, days after a new Ukrainian government was installed by coup-makers. Ninety-seven percent of the peninsula's population voted in a referendum to reunite with Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that "the Crimea issue is closed" as the peninsula's residents decided to rejoin Russia based on the most democratic procedures.
