Ukraine admits it will ask the West to send troops to Kiev if it lacks forces
(Baonghean.vn) - Deputy Alexey Goncharenko - Deputy Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament said that Ukraine could ask the West to send troops if the armed forces could not stop the advance of the Russian army.
TASS news agency reported on May 5 that speaking on LCI TV channel (France), MP Alexey Goncharenko said that Ukraine could turn to European countries to request sending troops to its territory, if the Ukrainian Armed Forces cannot stop the advance of the Russian army.
"If Ukraine cannot stop Russia's advance on its own without European support, then perhaps we will ask to send troops," said MP Goncharenko.
This statement by the Ukrainian parliamentarian took place in the context of the recent May 2 interview with The Economist magazine by French President Emmanuel Macron, who once again mentioned the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine, if Kiev requests and if Russian forces break through on the front line.
In late March 2024, in an interview with the Spanish newspaper Pais, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal affirmed that the country still has enough troops to fight, and does not request troops from Europe.
"No European country agrees to send troops to the battlefield, because that means they will go to war. And we are absolutely clear to everyone that sending troops to Ukraine is impossible at the moment," the Ukrainian prime minister added.
Amid a shortage of personnel and ongoing general mobilization, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has asked Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Alexandr Syrsky to find a different approach to mobilizing and rotating troops, in order to attract nearly 1 million people who are not participating in the war to the battlefield./.
