Application of cold recycling scraping technology in traffic construction in Nghi Loc

(Baonghean) - Implementing new rural construction while budget is limited, Nghi Loc district leaders directly invited contractors and applied Japanese cold scraping and regeneration technology to renovate and upgrade rural traffic routes; helping to reduce nearly 40% of construction costs, opening up a new solution in construction investment.

The first test in Nghi Hoa commune (Nghi Loc) on the inter-commune road with the participation and witness of all communes and leaders of departments of Nghi Loc district on a new technology in road construction - That is the application of cold regeneration scraping technology, a technology that has been widely applied by the Ministry of Transport according to Decision No. 1588/QD-BGTVT dated May 23, 2016.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung - Chairman of Nghi Loc District People's Committee said: Realizing the superior technology, cost savings, high efficiency while ensuring quality, we invited the enterprise Viettraco Transport Equipment Company (Hanoi) to deploy the first project in the area and invited leaders of communes that are building new rural areas to visit, learn and deploy in their communes to save investment costs.

Witnessing the excavators and rollers working urgently and effectively, Nghi Hung Commune Party Secretary - Mr. Nguyen Dinh Hoang said: Previously, we built new rural roads using traditional technology, 1 km costing 1.2 - 1.4 billion VND, the commune had only completed 3 km, currently there are 8 km of road not yet built, in addition, cultural and environmental institutions... have not met the new rural criteria. Witnessing this technology, we see that the cost for 1 km of road is only 750 million VND, much cheaper than the traditional method, however, the difficulty is that we have to proactively fund the cost at once for the enterprise while the people's conditions are still difficult.

Cold in-situ regeneration reinforcement technology is a construction method using specialized machines manufactured by SAKAI Japan. Specialized equipment has the ability to simultaneously break down the old pavement structure in depth and mix it evenly with the reinforcement material to form a reinforcement material mixture. The mixture is leveled and compacted to form a durable material layer, increasing the strength of the pavement structure by more than 2 times compared to the traditional repair and upgrade method or replacing new materials.

Cold scraping and regeneration technology is suitable for renovating old asphalt concrete pavements with a base layer of stone aggregate or crushed stone, gravel or old crushed stone aggregate pavement with a regeneration depth of the old pavement structure from 8cm to more than 30cm, the binder is usually emulsion, foamed bitumen with or without cement additives.

This technology has the following advantages: It is carried out simultaneously with scraping, milling, mixing, re-spreading and compacting by a combination of continuous motorbikes, so the construction is fast, the quality is good and the quality is easy to control; it can thoroughly handle cracks and deformations of the old road surface. It is very suitable for construction on roads in operation, and can allow direct traffic on the recycled surface after 1 - 3 days. It makes the most of old, recycled materials, so it is less necessary to use additional materials, the cost is cheaper than making new ones, it can reduce the cost by up to 50% compared to the cement concrete road construction method and reduce the cost by 10% compared to traditional methods due to the use of 100% of old materials on site and shorten the construction time by up to 50% compared to other methods.

Using this technology, the old road surface elevation can be maintained (or slightly raised) due to the active regulation of the amount of materials used, with little impact on the environment due to the use of less additional stone materials. Construction using this technology does not affect auxiliary works on the route.

Currently, the deterioration of rural roads in Nghe An province in general and Nghi Loc district in particular is quite common, while the budget is limited and increasingly reduced. For the National Target Program on New Rural Construction, the budget is mainly contributed by the people, so the more difficult the budget is, the application of new technology and the above-mentioned budget reduction of Viettraco Transport Equipment Company (Hanoi) is very suitable.

Currently, this unit has deployed a number of projects such as Ho Chi Minh road, provincial roads in Hung Yen, Lang Son... and recently applied to building new rural roads in Yen Thanh district (Nghe An).

Nghi Loc district leaders also added that in the near future, the district will apply this technology to many other projects in the area.

Cold regeneration technology was first applied in the US, European countries and Japan for over 30 years, typically by Wirtgen and SaKai. The benefit of cold regeneration is to reduce the backlog of the road system that needs maintenance by up to 60%. The results show that cold regeneration pavement, if constructed to meet requirements, will have a lifespan of 15 - 20 years.
