Opening new directions

In 2011, the Agricultural Competitiveness Project in Nghe An cooperated with the North Central Agricultural Science and Technology Institute to deploy a model of applying the integrated nutrient management process (ICM) in Dien Chau, Nghi Loc and Nam Dan districts to transfer the technology process of intensive peanut cultivation to achieve high productivity. Mr. Cao Hieu - Chairman of the People's Committee of Dien Thinh Commune, Dien Chau said: Dien Thinh has 430 hectares of spring peanuts and more than 50 hectares of winter peanuts.

Previously, people grew peanuts according to traditional experience, and almost did not apply scientific and technological advances to improve productivity and product quality. Since the Agricultural Competitiveness Project and the Peanut Production and Consumption Alliance were established, farmers have been trained and guided on intensive peanut cultivation processes, especially the application of ICM processes in production has created a strong breakthrough. The average peanut yield is 31 - 32 quintals/ha, higher than normal growing areas by 3.5 - 4 quintals/ha.

In addition, farmers were also transferred pest management processes for peanuts, effectively preventing 20 types of diseases, helping to overcome the situation of frequent diseases that damage winter peanuts due to weather conditions, balanced growth and development, and higher productivity... Every year, Nghe An plants over 20,000 hectares of peanuts, with an average spring crop yield of 25 - 27 quintals/ha, with a total output of 45 - 55 thousand tons. Dien Chau and Nghi Loc districts have many peanut production models applying comprehensive intensive farming measures such as new advanced varieties, covering with plastic, with productivity up to 5 tons/ha, 2.4 - 2.6 tons/ha higher.

In recent years, the application of science and technology in agricultural production has always been of interest to localities and has achieved many remarkable results. Many scientific and technological advances have been applied in the mass production of advanced rice varieties such as herbal rice of Vinh Hoa Company Limited, VTNA2 of Nghe An Agricultural Materials Joint Stock Corporation... for high quality products.

Forming high-tech production zones

Mr. Ngo Huy Han - Communications Director of TH Food Chain Joint Stock Company shared: All stages from land preparation, sowing to harvesting are operated in a modern industrial style, fully automated, machines have replaced human labor, only one worker can operate and handle a series of stages on an area of ​​3 - 5 hectares/day, from tilling the land, fertilizing, sowing seeds, or cutting raw materials, chopping and transferring to trucks when harvesting. From a maximum income of 70 million VND/ha of agricultural land, thanks to High Technology Application (UDCNC), that number has increased more than 10 times.

In the raw material areas of sugarcane, tea, rubber... there are processing factories. Along with that is the participation of enterprises investing from production to consumption of products. Since the decision to approve the Project on Developing UDCNC Agriculture to 2020 of the province, Nghe An has initially achieved remarkable results. Along with the planning of UDCNC agricultural production areas, the province has directed to focus on research, technology transfer and agricultural extension in production.

Notably, the industrial-scale dairy cow farming projects of TH Food Chain Joint Stock Company with a herd of cows and calves now reaching over 45,000; the dairy cow farming project in Dong Hieu, Thai Hoa town of Vinamilk Vietnam Dairy Joint Stock Company with a herd of nearly 3,000 cows and calves. Also in Nghia Dan, May Forestry Joint Stock Company with many UDCNC projects such as the project of growing vegetables and flowers for export in greenhouses; raising fish in cages on lakes using Israeli technology, or the Nghia Dan wood processing project with a capacity of 400,000 tons of products/year...

The organization of production management needs to be changed in a more appropriate and effective direction, so that cooperatives can connect farmers in the region, direct farmers in production and partner with businesses, even find markets for large quantities of products and concentrate on UDCNC in production. Regarding specialized sectors, the Agriculture and Science and Technology sector needs to focus on coordinating and transferring high technologies into production in the direction of intensive production, water-saving irrigation, and deeper processing.

Mr. Ho Ngoc Sy - Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development shared: The industry will focus on controlling and researching to have high-tech technical packages for each type of crop suitable for specific conditions of land and weather. Hopefully, preferential policies and support from the Central and the province will contribute to being "leverage" to attract more "qualified" businesses to invest in this field in Nghe An.
