By the morning of October 28, in the coastal communes of Quynh Minh, Quynh Luong, Quynh Bang, many vegetable areas were flooded. Many people had to brave the rain to harvest vegetables. Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, hamlet 7, Quynh Luong commune said: "It has been raining heavily for the past few days, my family had to mobilize everyone in the house to go to the field to harvest 4 sao of vegetables. If it rains heavily for a few more days, everything will be flooded"... In the autumn-winter crop this year, Quynh Luong commune planted 200 hectares of vegetables, of which scallions accounted for 80% of the area, the rest were vegetables such as tomatoes, cabbage, sweet cabbage... According to preliminary statistics in 4 days of rain, currently 30% of the vegetable area in Quynh Luong commune has been completely lost due to flooding. Mr. Dinh Trong Tue - Vice Chairman of Quynh Luong Commune People's Committee said: "If it rains heavily for a few more days, the entire vegetable area of the people will definitely be completely lost. We are focusing on directing people and cooperatives to check the drainage system in the fields to have measures to minimize the damage."
In the vegetable field of Quynh Minh commune, Mrs. Ho Thi Hao in hamlet 6 is harvesting flooded vegetables with her husband; she said that this winter crop, her family planted 5 sao of vegetables, and at this time the vegetables are ready to be harvested. If it doesn't rain, they will harvest slowly to sell in time, but now they have to focus on harvesting quickly, to avoid the vegetables rotting when the rain stops. Many people in Quynh Minh commune said that every year, when it rains heavily, vegetables are flooded. Currently, the irrigation system in the fields is mainly built temporarily with earthen ditches, while over 50% of the drainage ditches are built with concrete. Therefore, drainage during prolonged heavy rains is very slow. Mr. Tran Minh Loi - agricultural officer of Quynh Minh commune said: "When heavy rains last for a long time, the commune directs people to quickly harvest vegetable products; at the same time, prepare some short-term crop varieties to plant in between crops when the weather is favorable; take care of vegetable crops in high areas where the soil is eroded by rain, exposing the roots, then cover them up. After the rain stops, direct people to use root stimulants such as phosphate and advise people not to apply nitrogen fertilizers...".

This winter crop, Quynh Bang commune planted more than 200 hectares of vegetables. Mr. Vu Van Duong - an agricultural officer of Quynh Bang commune said: "Currently, we cannot estimate the area of damaged vegetables because it is raining. After the rain stops, the sun will cause the young vegetables to rot, only then can we calculate the damage".
Faced with the situation of flooding vegetables due to heavy rain in the coastal communes, Ms. Vu Thi Bich Hang - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quynh Luu district said: “Facing the disadvantages of the weather, in order to minimize the damage caused by heavy rain, Quynh Luu district has directed farmers to actively go to the fields to dredge canals and clear the flow to avoid local flooding. Immediately after the rain stops, the district will organize a delegation to inspect and grasp the situation. If the vegetable area of the farmers is severely damaged, there will be support measures according to the State's policy. At the same time, encourage people to immediately after the rain stops to step up care, quickly water to wash away soil stuck to the shoots and leaves of the plants so that the plants can grow quickly; apply nitrogen fertilizer properly combined with pest control so that the plants can grow normally again".
