A 27-year-old patient (Bac Ninh) was hospitalized in an unconscious state, with low blood sugar and arrhythmia.

According to his family, during the New Year's Eve party on the night of January 31, the young man and his group of friends drank about 8-9 bottles of 500 ml wine. After the party, he felt tired, vomited a lot, and quickly fell into a coma. His family took him to Bach Mai Hospital for emergency treatment that same night.

Tests showed that the patient's blood sugar and potassium levels were low and his heart rhythm was irregular. Fortunately, the patient was rushed to the hospital in time, saving his life.

On the same night, another 28-year-old patient in Hanoi was brought to the hospital by his family with abdominal pain, fatigue, and loss of appetite. The patient was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis due to drinking alcohol for 8 years. Each time he drank about half a liter of alcohol or 10 glasses of beer.

This patient was given timely emergency care by the doctor and has passed the dangerous stage but must celebrate Tet in the hospital.

Doctor Nguyen Trung Nguyen, in charge of the Poison Control Center at Bach Mai Hospital, said that long-term alcohol abuse leads to liver and neurological diseases and reduces the body's immunity. Many people mistakenly believe that drinking "genuine" wine and beer does not harm the liver.

"Alcohol is identified as being linked to 200 diseases, and is the most toxic substance that causes the most diseases among substances that are harmful to health," Dr. Nguyen emphasized. Long-term alcohol consumption weakens the immune system, reducing the body's resistance. People who drink alcohol for a long time when suffering from pneumonia and general infections are very likely to develop serious complications, increasing the risk of death compared to patients who do not drink alcohol.

Doctor Nguyen warned that the hospital received many patients with methanol poisoning. Most of them drank white wine without labels or unknown origins. Profit-seeking manufacturers mixed industrial alcohol into the wine to sell for profit.

Methanol in the body is converted into a poison, which takes effect slowly, and external symptoms become apparent after 1-2 days. If consumed continuously, the poison accumulates and causes damage to the patient. In severe cases, death or sequelae in the brain, eyes due to edema, telangiectasia, cerebral hemorrhage... Even if the patient is saved, he or she will lose the ability to work, becoming a burden to the family and society.

Doctors advise everyone to enjoy Tet without forgetting to take care of their health, drink beverages of known origin, and drink in moderation. When there are signs of fatigue, stop drinking alcohol and find a place to rest.
