The power of the world's leading aircraft carriers
Former US Defense Secretary William Cohen once stated that without aircraft carriers, Washington’s influence and voice would decline. Many countries around the world also agree with this view and have focused on developing aircraft carriers in recent years.
Launched in late 1996 and commissioned in 1998, the US Navy's aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman is more than 330 meters long, has a capacity of 90 aircraft, carries 3,200 sailors and 2,480 aircrew. Harry S. Truman is currently anchored at Norfolk Naval Base in Virginia and has participated in the air campaign against IS since 2015. Aircraft launched from this aircraft carrier have dropped more than 1,118 bombs on IS targets, surpassing the previous record of the USS Theodore Roosevelt. (Photo: US Navy)
HTMS Chakri Naruebet is Thailand’s only aircraft carrier and the “ace” of the Royal Thai Navy. Chakri Naruebet was originally built in Spain in 1994 and launched in 1996. The ship is over 180m long, carrying 393 sailors, 62 officers, 146 pilots and aircrew. Chakri Naruebet has been deployed on several disaster relief missions, but spends most of its time at anchor. Apart from participating in one day of training each month, Chakri Naruebet is used to serve the travel activities of the Thai Royal Family. (Photo: US Navy)
Named after former Mississippi Senator John Stennis, the USS John C. Stennis is more than 1,100 feet long, carries 90 aircraft, 3,200 sailors and 2,480 aircrew. Commissioned in 1995, the USS John C. Stennis is homeported at Naval Base Kitsap in Washington. The USS John C. Stennis has participated in the US's global war on terror and has been deployed in anti-piracy operations in the Persian Gulf. (Photo: US Navy)
Commissioned in 1992, the USS George Washington aircraft carrier is currently stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. The ship is over 332m long, carries 90 aircraft and 3,200 sailors. The USS George Washington was deployed to the Persian Gulf in 2000 and operated in New York Harbor after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to protect US airspace. In addition to the US's war on terror, the USS George Washington also participated in disaster relief in the Philippines after the 2013 typhoon and helped Haiti after the 2016 typhoon. (Photo: USN)
The Admiral Kuznetsov is the only aircraft carrier and plays a central role in the Russian Navy. Launched in 1985, it was not until 1995 after the collapse of the Soviet Union that the Admiral Kuznetsov began full operation. The ship is about 300m long, carrying 41-53 aircraft, including Su-33, MiG-29K and Ka-27 fighters, along with 1,960 sailors and 626 aircrew personnel. The Kuznetsov was the first Russian aircraft carrier to participate in combat support in the campaign on the Mediterranean coast of Syria in 2016 with 420 operations and attacking 1,252 targets. The Admiral Kuznetsov showed signs of its "age" when it lost 2 aircraft due to broken arrester cables that prevented the aircraft from landing safely on this aircraft carrier. (Photo: Reuters)
With a length of more than 332m, carrying 90 aircraft, 3,200 sailors and 2,480 aircrew, the USS Abraham Lincoln was commissioned in 1989 and is currently docked at Everett Air Force Base in Washington. The first US aircraft carrier to be staffed with female fighter pilots, the USS Abraham Lincoln has participated in the relief of US soldiers on the Philippine island of Luzon after the eruption of Mount Pinatubo, patrolled in Somalia and helped Japan after the tsunami. After a four-year overhaul and refueling, the USS Abraham Lincoln was put back into service last year. (Photo: Reuters)
Similar in size to the USS Abraham Lincoln and the USS George Washington, the USS Theodore Roosevelt is currently stationed at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia. Its aircraft have flown 4,200 sorties during Operation Desert Storm and dropped more than 2 tons of weapons since its commission in 1986. The USS Theodore Roosevelt has also played a key role in the fight against IS, launching more than 1,800 sorties and dropping more than 1,085 weapons against IS. The carrier has also been deployed to the Arabian Sea to intercept weapons shipments. (Photo: US Navy)
Italy's first aircraft carrier, the Giuseppe Garibaldi, commissioned in 1985, is 180m long and carries 630 sailors and 100 aircraft operators. The Giuseppe Garibaldi has participated in combat operations off the coast of Kosovo, Afghanistan and Libya. Harrier fighter jets flew more than 30 sorties from the carrier to the Balkans in 1999 and participated in 288 operations in the first year of the Afghanistan war. During NATO's Libya campaign, aircraft from the Giuseppe Garibaldi dropped 160 guided bombs in 1,221 flight hours. (Photo: AP)
Docked at the North Island Naval Base in San Diego, California, the USS Carl Vinson, named after the Georgia congressman, is comparable in size to other US aircraft carriers such as the USS Abraham Lincoln, USS George Washington and USS Theodore Roosevelt. The USS Carl Vinson was also the ship used to bury the body of terrorist leader Osama Bin Laden. In 2014, the US deployed this aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf to support the fight against IS. Planes from the USS Carl Vinson flew 12,300 sorties, dropping more than 230 tons of weapons on IS targets. (Photo: US Navy)
The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier is more than 332m long, carrying 90 aircraft, 3,200 sailors and 2,480 aircrew personnel. Commissioned in 1977, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower participated in the rescue of American hostages during the Iran hostage crisis and moved from the Suez Canal to the Red Sea during Operation Desert Storm. The aircraft carrier also launched anti-IS aircraft, dropping nearly 1,100 bombs on IS targets in Iraq and Syria. The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower is anchored at the Nortfolk base in Virginia. Named after Captain Chester Nimitz, who led the US Navy during World War II, the USS Nimitz is the first Nimitz-class aircraft carrier and has participated in many US Navy operations. The USS Nimitz was first deployed to the Indian Ocean during the Iran hostage crisis, provided security support at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, and operated in the Persian Gulf after Operation Desert Storm. The aircraft carrier has also participated in exercises near the Korean Peninsula with South Korean ships. The USS Nimitz's homeport is Naval Station Everett in Washington. (Photo: US Navy).
