V.League 2020 with the mission of 'panning for gold'
(Baonghean.vn) - After the failure at the 2020 AFC U23 Championship, the Vietnam U23 team no longer has a mission to compete this year, the players will be tested at V.League 2020. Will there be any new faces for the youth team that will attend the 31st SEA Games (November 2021) as host?
Although we participated in the 2020 AFC U23 Championship as runners-up and aimed to get a ticket to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, experts were not sad when we left Thailand early. That's all the strength of Vietnam U23!
Inheritance gap
But if at the end of 2021, as the host, U22 Vietnam cannot defend the SEA Games gold medal, there will be no excuse. The 31st SEA Games will be held in November next year, meaning that Mr. Park and VFF only have V.League 2020 to find new talent.
After saying goodbye to the 2020 AFC U23 Championship, Mr. Park has only 6 players old enough to participate in the 31st SEA Games and the 2022 AFC U23 Championship. They are goalkeeper Van Toan, goalkeeper number 3 Y Eli Nie (2001), central defender Viet Anh (born in 1999); midfielders Bao Toan, Huu Thang, and striker Manh Dung (born in 2000).
Of these, only Viet Anh and Bao Toan were allowed to play, in fact Bao Toan only played the last 20 minutes of the match against North Korea, the remaining 4 names did not play a single minute. The weak legacy force also forced us to leave Thailand early, even though Mr. Park had 7 runners-up from 2 years ago, of which 4 were starters.

Perhaps at that time, Doan Van Hau (born in 1999) will be the leader of the U23 Vietnam team to defend the SEA Games gold medal. In fact, it can be said that this defender is the only player who can stand shoulder to shoulder with the generation of Quang Hai, Duc Chinh, Dinh Trong... who just won the gold medal at the SEA Games in the Philippines. If he continues to maintain his form, goalkeeper Van Toan is the second name to be expected.
Obviously, V.League 2020 and the First Division must find about 30 new faces to choose about 10 more names to supplement the U22 Vietnam squad in the future. This is not an easy task, because the 2020 AFC U.23 Championship shows that we are having a big gap in the successor generation and is a lesson in systematic selection, training, and competition.
The fact that teams in the V.League are still competing to use players around 40 years old such as Le Van Phu (HCMC), Do Merlo (Nam Dinh)... shows that coaches are not ready to use young players. In addition to HAGL and Hanoi, which are showing a certain level of confidence, the 2020 V.League also has Nam Dinh and SLNA, who are promoting a series of young players to participate in the tournament because they do not have money to buy players.
Expectations for young SLNA players
Except for the National U21 Championship, our young players currently only practice “dry”, rarely getting to play. V.League and first division clubs often use a 4-defender formation, so the U23 Vietnam team cannot find 2 wing-back midfielders among the 40 players.
