Before being tested and successfully played by Coach Park Hang-seo as a right wingback in the 3-4-3 formation of the Vietnam National Team, Trong Hoang's forte was as a right winger. This is the position in which Trong Hoang played very successfully for SLNA, B.Binh Duong, Thanh Hoa, Viettel, U23 Vietnam and the Vietnam National Team.

In the past, under coach Nguyen Huu Thang, coach Nguyen Duc Thang, coach Ngo Quang Truong and now coach Nguyen Huy Hoang, SLNA often played with the familiar 4-4-2 formation. It is worth mentioning that in recent seasons, the right winger position has always been the "weakest link" of the Nghe An team, after Tran Phi Son left Vinh Stadium (late 2017).
Although many options have been tested, the results have been quite disappointing. From Ho Tuan Tai, Cao Xuan Thang, Tran Dinh Tien, Nguyen Van Viet to Pham Xuan Manh, none of them have been able to "fill the gap" left by Tran Phi Son. In addition to the two positions of right-back (3-4-3 formation) and right-winger (4-4-2 formation), Trong Hoang can also take on the central position of the midfield.
