Van Don will be a center for marine and island ecotourism.
Striving to attract 620,000 tourists and gradually becoming a center for marine and island ecotourism is the goal that Van Don island district (Quang Ninh province) is aiming for in the 2013 tourism year.

To prepare for the 2013 summer tourist season, the People's Committee of Van Don district, along with businesses and travel companies, are innovating and strengthening service management and promotion to create a positive impression on tourists.
Mr. Le Quang Thach, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Van Don District, said: The People's Committee of the district has coordinated with departments, organizations, the people, and tourism service businesses to focus on upgrading Provincial Road 334, beautifying urban areas on main routes, inter-communal roads in Minh Chau and Quan Lan, implementing projects to provide clean water and electricity systems in island communes. They have also improved the docking system in island communes and built a large-scale tourist port in the South Port area of Cai Rong town.
The district is also focusing on promoting tourism and festivals through mass media, actively participating in and supporting the province's tourism activities, and participating in trade fairs to display, sell, and introduce the district's distinctive products.
The district also invests budget in training human resources for the tourism industry, encourages businesses to organize on-the-job training for employees, and organizes study tours both domestically and internationally.
Currently, the district has approximately 1,230 rooms for tourists, of which 350 rooms (29%) meet 1- to 2-star standards, and the rest are rooms meeting other standards.
In 2012, the number of visitors to Van Don continued to increase, mainly focusing on the island routes, with longer stays compared to previous years, averaging 1.5-2 days. The number of visitors in the district was estimated at 540,000, an increase of 13% compared to 2011.
