According to the Guardian (UK), Van Gaal submitted his resignation after the loss to Southampton last weekend. However, Executive Vice President Ed Woodward has not yet accepted and wants Van Gaal to discuss it with his family. The former Barca and Bayern strategist has returned to the Netherlands for two days to attend his daughter's birthday.
Van Gaal will return to Manchester on Tuesday and meet Ed Woodward at his Carrington headquarters. The meeting could mark the end of Van Gaal's year and a half in charge at Old Trafford.
Last season, Van Gaal helped Man Utd reach the top 4 of the Premier League, and qualify for the Champions League. However, things got worse this year, Man Utd were eliminated from Europe's most prestigious tournament in the group stage and were five points behind the top 4. In addition, Van Gaal made Man Utd play slow, boring football, which went against the club's philosophy.
After the defeat to Southampton, Van Gaal admitted that he had disappointed the fans and that he "deserved to be booed". Earlier, on Boxing Day, Van Gaal announced that he could resign without the team being sacked.
The Times revealed that Vice President Ed Woodward had to persuade Van Gaal to resign twice, the first time on December 19 last year, and the most recent on January 2. Ed Woodward still wanted Van Gaal to lead the team until the end of the season, because of the chaos in this final stage.
