Previously, in December 2020, Van Hau had to undergo surgery for a knee cartilage injury. After a period of treatment at PVF, Van Hau was called up by coach Park Hang-seo to the Vietnam national team for the second qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup in the UAE. He came on as a substitute in the match against Indonesia and started in the two matches against Malaysia and the UAE.

Returning from the UAE, Van Hau showed signs of a relapse of his injury.
