Prayer for the 1st day of the 3rd lunar month

Quoc Duan March 29, 2025 06:13

The prayer recited on the first day of the lunar month is a traditional ritual not only to pray for oneself and one's family, but also to wish for peace and prosperity in life.

The prayer recited on the first day of each lunar month is not only a sacred act of prayer, but also a way to connect with the culture and traditions of the Vietnamese people. At the same time, it is an opportunity for each person to express gratitude and respect for their ancestors and deities, thereby fostering a greater sense of responsibility towards themselves, their families, and society, and wishing for a peaceful and happy life.

When reciting the prayer, maintain a solemn and sincere demeanor to show filial piety and gratitude towards your ancestors. After finishing the prayer, sit quietly for a while to calm your mind and reflect on the meaning of the ritual.

Below is a sample prayer for the first day of the lunar month, offered at the ancestral altar and to the deities and the earth god, for your reference.

I bow to the nine directions of heaven, the ten directions of all Buddhas, and all the Buddhas of the ten directions. I respectfully bow to the Heavenly Emperor, the Earth Goddess, and all the Venerable Deities.

I respectfully bow before the local tutelary deity, the local earth deity, the household kitchen god, and all other revered deities.

I respectfully bow before my ancestors, my deceased father and mother, and all departed spirits (if my parents are still alive, replace them with my paternal and maternal ancestors).

We, your humble devotees, are….......... residing at…..............

Today is the 1st day of the 3rd month (Canh Thin year) of the At Ti year.

With the grace of Heaven and Earth, the revered deities, and the ancestors, I, your humble devotee, sincerely prepare offerings of incense, flowers, tea, and fruit, and light a stick of incense before the altar.

We respectfully invite: the local tutelary deity, the great kings, the local earth god, the household kitchen god, the Five Directions deities, the dragon vein deity, and the god of wealth.

We humbly beseech you to descend before the altar, witness our sincerity, and accept our offerings. We respectfully invite our ancestors, both paternal and maternal, to have mercy on their descendants, to manifest themselves, witness our devotion, and accept our offerings.

We, your humble devotees, respectfully invite the former and current owners of this house to come before the altar, partake in the offerings, and bless our family with good health, peace, prosperity, success in business, and family harmony.

With humble hearts and sincere devotion, we respectfully bow before the altar and humbly ask for your protection and blessings.
