US consulate in Switzerland evacuated due to 'strange package'

The US consulate in Zurich, Switzerland, was evacuated today after a suspicious package appeared at the entrance.

Staff at the US consulate in Zurich, Switzerland, discovered a suspicious package containing messages targeting Americans and a phone number at the entrance of the building today, Blick reported. The package also had the words "for SWAT team" written on it.

The street near the US consulate was blocked off. Police were called to the building to inspect the package. Security forces later declared the package "harmless" and lifted the blockade.

The US Embassy in Bern said the situation was under control. However, the consulate office in Zurich will remain closed for the rest of today.
