Absence of traders buying - pork prices are falling sharply

Currently, the price of pigs is falling sharply, close to the cost of production, fluctuating between 3.8 - 3.9 million VND/quintal, causing many difficulties for farmers.

With traders sharply reducing their purchases of pork for export to China in recent times, the price of pork in the Mekong Delta has dropped sharply. In Dong Thap province, the situation is not much better as many households are also facing difficulties and are not restocking their herds. This reality predicts many fluctuations in the market during the Tet holiday at the end of the year.

As one of the long-time livestock farmers in Tan Phu Dong commune, Sa Dec city, Mr. Phan Phuoc Sanh has also been strongly affected by market prices this year. Currently, the price of pigs is falling sharply, close to the cost of production and only fluctuates from 3.8 to 3.9 million VND/quintal.

Many pig farmers in Dong Thap are facing difficulties and are not restocking their herds for Tet.

At this price, farmers hardly make any profit, even incur losses. Although the farming season has begun to prepare for Tet, many farmers like Mr. Sanh still do not dare to restock like in previous years.

“With current prices and consumption, it is expected that the supply of pigs for this year’s Lunar New Year will be lower than previous years. With about 2.5 months left until Tet, families can only export 1.5 - 2 tons of pigs, much lower than previous years,” Mr. Sanh shared.

With the price of pork decreasing, the production of flour in Tan Phu Dong flour making village is also less active, which makes it difficult for those who make flour to feed pigs to predict. According to the general rule, every year during the flood season, the price of pigs tends to decrease due to the appearance of caught freshwater fish. However, this year, the water is low and the amount of freshwater fish is not much, but the price of pigs has also decreased sharply.

Mr. Nguyen Tan Khoa, Tan Phu Dong commune, Sa Dec city, Dong Thap province said that this year's Tet holiday, the price of pigs has decreased, causing farmers to have no profit, and many families have reduced the number of pigs they raise.

Currently in Sa Dec city, there are only about 300 households making powder to raise pigs, a decrease of more than half compared to previous years. The number of pigs raised in the year is estimated to have also decreased significantly and is only about 60,000.

The products of the Craft Village are pigs and flour, which are still consumed in the traditional way. That is, buying and selling through traders. Regarding the direction of stability in flour making and pig raising, it is clear that there are still many issues to be addressed. Among them, the problem is to stabilize the pig herd and stabilize prices.

Mr. Do Van Tham, Head of the Economic Department of Sa Dec City, informed that the city has built and proposed the committee to issue a plan to develop the flour village. In which, there are many solutions such as re-planning the flour village production area, supporting flour makers, applying scientific and technological advances, and innovating equipment to create safe products at lower prices. Ensure that flour makers who raise pigs make a profit from flour and pigs.

The dependence on the Chinese market has recently revealed many weaknesses in production, linkage and consumption. When this market increases purchases, pork prices immediately increase, and from there people massively increase their herds.

When there is a change, traders reduce or stop buying, and the price falls to rock bottom. This shows that farmers are still not interested in the story of stability and the law of supply and demand, and have not yet taken precautions./.
